Im about to order this sysytem in a couple hours. Why am still on the fence I guess I could wait but $1525 seem like a great price for the system no You guys have lots more computer expierence than I do and I would like to hear from a few more people about the cost to build vs a dell system. I have went to different sites and for the price and materials the new Dell Studio XPS 435 seems a great machine with the ability to upgrade if wanted.
If anyone has any last minute advice please let me know, thanks in advance

I just built a similar speced system for around $1300. I used a less expensive video card and I already had one hard drive to use. Also got two DVD-RW drives. The biggest difference is that I have a 650W Corsair PSU and a Xigmatek CPU cooler. Probably $75 difference in price right there. I built mine because I wanted to, not specifically for money savings though. I just prefer to do it myself. That way I know the ins and outs of my machine.

So with the 2209WA moniter included thats a good price right ($1525)? Are u saying that even if I build it myself it will cost around the same?

My $1300 included the 2209WA monitor. The PC itself was just under $1100 after rebates.

Do you need RAID 1 on the OS drive though? I understand there might be a decrease in performance associated with that..?
I decided to just have two drives and schedule back ups. Less elegant perhaps, but got way confused reading about RAID..

I got a little confused also reading about RAID. I have had my system go down before so RAID 1 is just something for my peace of mind. I will get another hard drive and configure it to run the OS alone (once I figure out how the hell to do that) and I still need to be clear on this scratch disk thing (some say I need it other say I dont).
I never thought buying a PC would be this hard
The Dell seems like a good deal (from what I know), from what I gather I may be paying about $200 more than building my own (which is fine by me cause I dont know if I have the time or patience for that). Im so confused and wanna call in the order, but I hate to make a $1500 mistake

One of the things I didn't like about RAID was the issue of the controller. If it fails I understood there might be some problems.. In some cases you would have to get the same type of controller to get your data(?) Not sure how this is with RAID 1 though, and maybe this was for older hardware.
Other issued I had: RAID will be fine if your hard drive fails, but won't protect against accidental deletion for example. And any malware will infect both drives and you're sitting there with redundant corrupt data..
In the end I decided scheduled back up to an extra disk a couple times a week or so should be enough for me. For more productive people, and those with higher stakes in their data, this won't be enough though.
Heh, yeah it took me a month of studying to decided on a computer. I know I just pimped this elsewhere, but I ended up ordering from www.maxforcepc.com. Got a pc fully customized like I wanted it, and with overclocking and 3 year warranty. Join the forum and Max will give you a quote (the configurator is not very good). The Dell you picked looks good to me though.

To be truthful Im kinda tierd of this process, I think I may be over thinking this. After all I have been editing on a P4 with 2GB of RAM, so anything is an improvement. I think going with the new XPS 435 and i7 will leave me room to grow (not that I need it or think this build wont be good for at least 2-3 years). Im glad I have a place like this forum to vent and ask questions.
Thanks for the replies

yeah by the time you've researched and decided your choices are obsolete..
That i7 will no doubt blow away that old P4 so not much more to think about then. I was just wondering about the RAID config. Is for external storage in my case, but the same applies.. But like you I've tired of the research

Frank ... I know what you mean about being tired of the 'shopping' process.
So many choices and variables.
However, if it makes you feel better I'm getting almost the exact same machine from Dell in 5 days *fingers crossed*
It's the XPS 435
i7-920
6GB Tri channel memory
ATI HD 4670 video card
I TB harddrive.
I got the 2209WA monitor a few weeks ago.
Sometimes you just have to take the plunge. I think I'm going to be happy with this.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Had a studio xps 435MT (the smaller studio xps) with roughly those specs (2x500 in raid 0, middle of road 4850 graphics, 6gb and i7 920) and love it. I can do photoshop, maya 64bit, LR all at the same time, while converting two 1080p 5dmkii files to 720p. And still has no lag on any program. Pretty much overkill for anyone, and tends to suck up more power than equivalent core 2 machines, but you'll love it. Especially when you run two 24' monitors

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

No need to run for cover. There are many of us here that feel the same way.
